AN
INVITATION
Dear Colleagues,
It is an exciting time for biochemical engineering and
for the Asia Pacifi
c region. Continuing advances in biology and information
technologies
are posing new challenges for biochemical engineering.
There is new capability
to understand production processes at a more fundamental
level, thereby
allowing for more reliable and efficient production.
There are new production
systems, with their novel challenges. There are new
therapeutic approaches
which will extend the traditional definition of
biochemical engineering.
There are also challenging questions. Is there a likely
international
shortfall in manufacturing capability? If so, what role
might the Asia
Pacifi c region have in addressing such a shortfall? The
Asia Pacifi c
region has embraced modern biology and biotechnology
with perhaps greater
enthusiasm than any other technology wave, because of a
recognition of
its growing impact on its societies and economies at all
levels. Brisbane
is proud to continue the tradition of previous APBioChEC
meetings in providing
a forum for discussion of these key issues and for
meeting with existing
and new colleagues. I also invite delegates to visit our
new Institute
for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) located on the University
of Queensland
ST Lucia campus, just 15 minutes from the conference
venue. IMB is set
to open early 2003 and will house 700 biotechnologists.
IMB will feature
state-ofthe-art facilities housing a unique research
pipeline from genomics
and gene discovery through to the design and development
of new drugs
and therapeutics.

Deputy Vice Chancellor

Chair . APBioChEC 2003
INTRODUCTION
APBioChEC?03 will provide a forum to
facilitate communication
amongst Biochemical Engineers and Biotechnologists
working in the Asia
Pacific region. The conference seeks to identify
contract production opportunities
in the bioprocess field that are suitable for
exploitation in our region
during the new millennium. The scientific base of
biotechnology is progressing
rapidly. To capture the benefits of these new
discoveries in gene sequences,
protein structures and stem cells, however, requires a
capability to generate
and deliver novel products in an efficacious, safe and
cost effective
manner. In this conference we wish to continue a proud
tradition of addressing
how we can turn scientifi c breakthroughs into useful
bioprocesses and
products. Keynote speakers will talk to these current
and future issues
and we invite papers that address the relevant science,
engineering and
industry topics.
APBioChEC
HISTORY
APBioChEC conferences are entering their second decade.
The first conference
to bear the APBioChEC title was held at Kyungju in Korea
in April 1990.
Subsequent meetings have been held in Japan (1992),
Singapore (1994),
China (1997), and Thailand (1999). The themes for the
previous three conferences
have focussed on better living through innovative
biochemical engineering
and marching towards the new century/era of
biotechnology.
